This Soviet World, published in 1936 by American journalist Anna Louise Strong, is one of the most enthusiastic and detailed accounts produced by a Western observer of the Soviet Union during the height of Stalin’s Five-Year Plans.

The book shows a clear and direct contrast with the Great Depression that was ravaging the West at the time. While capitalism was collapsing, Strong depicts the USSR as a rising power, focused on rapid industrialization and the construction of a “new civilization.”
